…and Igarka, Hope and Butterfly.

Nadezhda Āriņš, Anatoly Taurenis. The title “Hope and Butterfly” refers to the characters. Nadezhda’s name means “hope” in Russian, whilst Anatolij’s surname, Taurenis, means “butterfly” in Latvian. The Āriņš family were deported on June 14 1941, at 4:00 am. They banged on the door with guns and got everyone up.  The family was given only 15 minutes to get ready.
Igarka – the gate to Siberia, beyond the Arctic Circle, where in three years a new Soviet port and city were built. It’s a God-farsaken place, a city created to murder people, a city surrounded with concentrations camps.

“I always thought I’d have to stay in Igarka until the end of my life.”
